A short drive out of Nairobi’s central business district is the Nairobi National Park. Wide open grass plains and backdrop of the city scrapers, scattered acacia bush play host to a wide variety of wildlife. Black rhino, lions, hyenas, buffaloes, giraffes and diverse bird life with over 400 species have been recorded in the park. Visitors can enjoy the park’s picnic sites, three campsites and the walking trails for hikers.

The Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage is a sanctuary which raises orphaned baby elephants and integrates them back in the wild. Every day at 11 am, baby elephants hurtle out of the acacia forest into a muddy watering hole area to meet their keepers for feeding time. For one precious hour, you can watch them from the sidelines before they wander back into the woodlands. The keepers on-site will teach you all about the work of the orphanage, and the importance of their conservation efforts.

The Giraffe Center was first opened in response to the endangered status of the Rothschild giraffe. The population declined, reaching a low of 130 animals in the wild as a result of agricultural practices in their native habitat. Successful fundraising efforts secured money to move four herds of these graceful animals to Lake Nakuru National Park, Nasalot Game Reserve, Mwea Game Reserve and Ruma National Park. The success of these efforts has increased the population to over 500 individual giraffes in Kenya alone.
